Broken Tooth Specialist

A single broken tooth can significantly increase your risk for decay, disease and tooth loss, in addition to interfering with your normal bite balance. As a leading dentist in San Francisco, CA, Dr. Potesta-Knoll has extensive experience in restoring broken teeth to help patients avoid more significant damage and enjoy optimal oral health.

Broken Tooth Q & A

Fiorella Potesta-Knoll, DDS, MS

What should I do if I break a tooth?

A broken tooth should be considered a dental emergency, and you should call the office immediately to schedule an appointment so you can be evaluated and your tooth can be repaired. Without proper and prompt treatment, a broken tooth can expose the tooth interior to decay and infection, eventually resulting in the loss of the tooth as well as increasing the potential for more extensive damage to neighboring teeth. Until you can be seen in our office, ice packs and pain relievers can be used to help relieve pain and minimize swelling.

What can I do to prevent tooth breakage?

One of the best ways to prevent tooth fractures is to follow a program of proactive preventive care, including regular brushing and flossing at home as well as professional dental cleanings and checkups every six months. Teeth that are healthy and maintained are far less likely to break. It's also important to wear a mouthguard when participating in sports or other contact activities and to avoid biting or chewing on ice or hard candies or using your teeth as prying tools.

How is a broken tooth treated?

That depends on the extent of the break and how much of the tooth is affected or involved. When a break occurs below the gum line, oral surgery may be needed to access the lower portion of the tooth so the tooth can be rebuilt. Less extensive tooth fractures may be treated with crowns or other restorations aimed at rebuilding the tooth structure and providing additional strength to avoid future breakage. If a tooth breaks as the result of a cavity, the decay will need to be removed and a filling will need to be applied. Deeper decay in the central pulp portion of the tooth may need to be corrected with a root canal procedure followed by a crown to provide added strength and protection. In a very severe break or if the tooth has extensive decay, it may need to be extracted. Prior to any treatment, the tooth will be carefully evaluated to ensure the most appropriate approach is used.
