Maxillofacial Prosthetics Q & A

What are maxillofacial prosthetics?

The maxillofacial area is the area of the face that comprises the head, neck, face and jaws, as well as the teeth and the hard and soft tissues of the mouth. The shape of the maxillofacial area plays a major role in defining your appearance. Maxillofacial prosthetics are prostheses designed to address defects in these areas, which may result from cancer surgery, birth defects, tumors, deep and aggressive infections, and traumatic injuries. The prosthetic materials are created from state-of-the-art materials to provide a natural-looking result that can be crafted for each person's individual needs. In addition to improving aesthetics, maxillofacial prosthetics can also be created to aid patients with chewing or swallowing problems or speech difficulties. Prosthetics can also greatly improve the overall quality of life for patients whose maxillofacial areas have been compromised by cancer therapy or other causes.

When are maxillofacial prosthetics used?

Maxillofacial prosthetic treatment is used for patients who have abnormalities of the head, face or neck, for patients who have had cancer surgery or undergone radiation or chemotherapy in the head or neck, and for those who have had traumatic injuries affecting the head, neck, and mouth areas. In some patients, the use of maxillofacial prosthetic procedures may be used in place of cosmetic surgery or reconstructive surgery, especially in patients who have very large defects, who are in poor overall health or who are older. Maxillofacial implants can be especially effective for patients who have had tissue or bone damage due to radiation therapy, and they can be an important part of a multidisciplinary approach used to treat congenital (present at birth) or acquired defects.

What happens during treatment?

The placement of a maxillofacial prosthetic is a highly individualized procedure that requires careful fitting and surgical approaches based on each person's unique needs. Treatment will begin with a consultation and evaluation appointment so you can learn about your options and discuss the specific approach and prosthetics that will be used to help you achieve the results you're looking for.
